July is always an important month for us as our focus is on pool safety education. Fact is, drowning is almost always preventable yet it is still prevalent around the world and in South Africa. PowerPlastics Pool Covers has for the past 20 years championed and led pool safety and today is acknowledged as the industry leader in drowning prevention. We are passionate about the work we do and the lives that we save every day. When parents and supervisors are not there to save their children from drowning in swimming pools, we are, with the leading safety cover - our design, copied by many. We are delighted that our own government has acknowledged the urgent call to action, agreeing with us in the pool industry that safety interventions need to take place if drownings are to be reduced.

Our work with other educational initiatives continues and we support the incredible teams at the NSRI who have always led sea and flat water rescue much like we have led pool safety. If you would like to get involved, why not sponsor one of their innovative Pink Buoys. Every day these buoys save lives around the country and the NSRI does such important work in making everyone aware of water safety.

Watch our social media pages in the coming weeks for our campaign around World Drowning Prevention Day on 25 July. Please share our safety tips far and wide as this is the kind of content that saves lives. Use our website and social media as a trusted source for factual information about drowning.

And cover your pools. Don't gamble on safety when securing a pool with a PowerPlastics Solid Safety Cover is so simple.

Stay safe.

How is pool safety regulated in South Africa?

In short, this is regulated by the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) as part of their recommended building standards. Learn more about the SABS Standard SANS 10134 here

Child and pet drownings are not seasonal.

Ensure your pool is secured year-round with the leading safety cover, originally designed by PowerPlastics Pool Covers

The PowerPlastics Solid Safety Cover is the industry benchmark cover for any pool owner that is concerned about child or pet safety. Choose from a range of colours to suit your own style.

Did you know that this safety cover doubles up as an energy-saving cover? This translates into less filtration and also fewer chemicals to maintain standard water hygiene. Definitely a consideration given the local electricity crisis and the need to save money.

Quality and installation matters

What to look for in a solid safety pool cover

When choosing a cover and supplier, ask the following questions to ensure you are getting the very best protective barrier for your pool.

  • Can the device bear weights of up to 220 kg?
  • Are there any gaps or openings that allow unsupervised entry? If yes, can I fit a ball of 9cm x 14cm x 30cm through the gap? (this being the size of a child’s head or torso)
  • Opening test – is the cover sufficiently anchored to prevent a child gaining access to the water?
  • Can water collect / pool on top of the cover and if yes, is there provision for it to drain away (this is to prevent small pools forming, something a child can drown in.)
  • Has it been installed by an accredited supplier?
PowerPlastics Pool Covers was the first to provide official certification when a pool is secured with our SABS-compliant solid safety cover and is one of a few who can offer this quality assurance.

So, can you confidently say that your pool cover company is accredited? Has it gone through rigorous testing and accreditation for the past 8 years to ensure that it complies with all the rigors of SABS SANS10134 and ASTMF1346-91 (the American standard for pool safety)? These are important disciplines and quality certificates. If not available move on to a responsible safety supplier who can provide such assurance, such as PowerPlastics Pool Covers.

Be proactive, prevent.

Once someone starts to drown, it is highly likely they won't survive. Survival is determined almost exclusively at the scene of the drowning incident, and depends on two factors: how quickly the person is removed from the water, and how swiftly proper resuscitation is performed. Prevention, therefore, is vital. Adults in the home MUST learn CPR.

Remembering drowning victims

Wear blue on 25 July 2023

The 25th of July is observed as World Drowning Prevention Day (WDPD). As declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN), this advocacy event serves to raise awareness of drowning as a global public health concern.

Locally, the NSRI supports the WHO's call for action. As one of the leading bodies in South Africa operating in the drowning prevention discipline, the NSRI is urging South Africans to commemorate the day by wearing blue on the 25th of July 2023. This colour symbolises the urgent need for action to reduce drownings. In addition, the colour blue is about remembering people who have drowned, creating awareness, and increasing knowledge about drowning.
